Nevertheless, at the conclusion of an extraordinary senior season, Holden has much to celebrate and even more to strive for in his next four years of intercollegiate track and field competition. The My Stats page on Tier7 shows you your most recent matches as well as how well you're performing with different heroes. The Bergen Group 2 Champion, Bergen County Overall Champion and North 1, Group 2 Sectional Champion has yet to break that "185" goal still written on his ceiling. "I felt it was the culmination of all they taught me." "It was great to carry on the Norsemen tradition and follow in the footsteps of my coaches, Holden said. With a throw just one inch shorter than his Group B performance, he solidified his place in the history books at Northern Valley/Demarest. Holden's most momentous victory of the season was at the Bergen Meet of Champions. Lee broke the NV/Demarest freshman record. The Norsemen had a lot to celebrate as both of Holden's teammates, freshman John Lee and sophomore Gabe Kahan, hit personal records. He also won the North 1 Group 2 Sectional Championship with a 178 feet 8 inches throw. He earned the blue shirt that day with a toss of 180 feet 2 inches for gold in the Group B Championship. Holden's best throw of the season was at the Bergen County Group Meet. My goal was to earn that blue shirt at the county meet and I wanted to show myself that I am a 180-foot thrower." "The red shirt is for 160 feet, but the blue one is for 180. "Our school has a shirt system for distance milestones," Holden explained. Holden knew he wanted to follow in both their footsteps. The Bergen Meet of Champions is a meet where the Norseman throwers are classically dominant. Last year, Class of 2015 alum Paul Ippolito won the Bergen Meet of Champions in javelin. Iafrate himself is the NV/Demarest school record-holder in the event, so the Norsemen strive to reach their coach's level. Head coach Mike Theuerkauf and the javelin coaching team of Iafrate and Dresler have developed many fantastic javelin throwers in recent years. "I threw 175 feet for the first time at the Old Tappan dual meet," Holden said, "so I crossed that off my ceiling and wrote '185.'" What was meant to be a long-term goal became just a one-distance milestone in a season of incredible throws. It was only the beginning, but his ceiling quickly had to be updated. Holden threw 172 feet at an early-season scrimmage in March. "I swam my whole life, and there is great, great camaraderie on that team," he said, "But I've been waiting for javelin season to come all year." Still, the "175" written on his ceiling was constantly on his mind. In the winter seasons, Holden competed for the Norsemen in the pool. Javelin is one of the few high school track and field events solely contested in the spring. He credits his remarkable development to the efforts of his coaches, Steve Iafrate and Emmett Dresler, and his willingness to follow their plan. Holden first picked up a javelin as a sophomore, but it soon became his primary athletic focus. This is how Holden operates and why he won meet after meet this past spring. The only way an athlete breaks out in this undeniably training-based sport is by setting a goal and consistently, tenaciously working to achieve it. It is about who can run the fastest, throw the farthest and leap the highest. Track and field is all about goal-setting and working to reach those goals. But for Holden, this number means everything. It is a number written on his ceiling that wouldn't really mean anything to most.
